M is for Massasauga Rattlesnake

The Massasauga Rattlesnake is one of the most beautiful animals I have seen. The eastern massasauga is a very shy snake and although there are small populations in Illinois and Wisconsin, I have never seen one in the wild.

These small rattlesnakes are protected because of their declining population. In addition to losing their natural environment, massasaugas have been hunted and killed because they are venomous. Killing venomous snakes just because they are venomous is a disgusting practice in my opinion.

I hope that we can learn to appreciate these beautiful creatures for the important role they play in our ecosystem.

  1. Not a fan of snakes, but I agree with you that killing them because they are poisonous is wrong - unless they are biting you! My latest A-Z Challenge blog is here: http://myheartblogstoyou.blogspot.com/2011/04/misunderstandings-i-know-you-didnt-say.html

  2. Not so fun when the snake you run across is in the basket for your pool - and you don't know what sort it is!

  3. Oh my goodness. Snakes really freak me out. Especially rattlesnakes. I can see their purpose, but I don't want to meet one in a dark alley...
